Red Hat and Novell Sued on Open Source Patent Issue | October 17, 2007- According to news reports, IP Innovation and Technology Licensing Corporation sued Red Hat and Novell on patents related to the Linux user interface. The complaint can be found here. | |
SFLC Files Suit to Enforce GPL | September 20, 2007- According to news reports, the Software Freedom Law Center has filed suit against a consumer electronics company for use of GPL code in an embedded system without compliance with the GPL. The complaint can be found here. | |
Draft GNU AGPL | August 14, 2007- The Free Software Foundation has released a discussion draft of the GNU Affero General Public License (GNU AGPL). The AGPL differs from the GPL in that it provides that users who interact with the software over a network can receive the source for that program. The text of the draft can be found here. | |
Judge: Novell Owns Unix Copyrights | August 10, 2007- A federal district court judge in Utah ruled that Novell, not the SCO Group, is the rightful owner of the copyrights covering the Unix operating system. This is a potentially fatal blow to the SCO complaint against IBM, as it means that SCO may not own what SCO says IBM misappropriated. Here is a copy of the 102 page decision in pdf format. | |

GPLv3 Soon? | March 20, 2007- According to reports, there may be a new interim draft of GPLv3 very soon (March, 2007?). Apparently the Novell-Microsoft deal sent the drafters back to revisit whether or not GPLv3 would preclude such activity.

SCO v IBM down to 326 lines? | March 20, 2007- According to one analysis of the SCO-IBM hearing earlier in March, evidence presented by SCO adds up to a total of 326 lines of code found exclusively in header files and similar items. | |
Microsoft to release source for FoxPro | March 19, 2007- Microsoft is reportedly releasing its Foxpro database under its Shared Source license in the near future.
